- Students are engaged in culturally relevant, rigorous grade level texts through every unit.
- All units and lessons are guided by essential questions connecting to the overarching theme of the year.
- Students understand literacy as the ability to read and write the word and the world.
- Students connect knowledge of self to their learning and analyze their social identities, intersectionality, and how systems of power influence how society views them.
+ Skills:
- All courses follow a vertical alignment map to build towards greater rigor and complexity from course to course.
- The majority of time in the majority of lessons is spent reading, writing, and/or speaking about complex texts and tasks.
- Students engage in structured academic discourse multiple times every class period in order to hone their literacy skills and deepen their understanding of content.
- Project-based learning serves as a vehicle for students learning and practicing the 5 Cs.
+ Agency:
- Students engage in productive struggle as they take on the majority of the cognitive load for most of every class period.
- Students embody the core values of Respect, Persevere, Build and Lead in order to act as agents of change.
- Throughout their courses as well as through the various Pathway elements, students are involved in projects and experiences that include civil engagement and community transformation.
