Head of School Message

Estimada Comunidad de ARISE,

Estoy profundamente agradecida por el gran honor de servir a esta comunidad centrada en la justicia social. Vine a este país de Valencia, España con mi madre a los quince años y entré en una escuela que no estaba diseñada para alguien que estaba acostumbrándose a la nueva cultura e idioma. Mis experiencias en el sistema educativo me llevaron a ser maestra, entrenadora, y directora en Florida y en Boston. Durante mis años como educadora me he dado cuenta de que la escuela es un hogar y centro comunitario, y tiene el potencial de realmente arropar y aprender de nuestras familias y estudiantes. 

He elegido unirme a ARISE porque quiero ser parte de una comunidad que realmente quiere cambiar y mejorar el mundo. Se que nuestra misión es algo que podemos conseguir y que es crucial en este momento político y social en el que vivimos. Una educación que apoya y enseña a derrumbar muros de odio y desigualdad es lo que exigimos. Para continuar apuntando hacia este objetivo elevado y necesario, debemos unir fuerzas y reimaginar y fortalecer radicalmente lo que significa estar con y para los demás como una comunidad.

Por esta razón he decidido vivir en East Oakland con mi pareja Morgan  y dos perritas (Rosa y Chita). Quiero realmente echar raíces aquí y formar parte de este extraordinario grupo de guerreros intelectuales. Espero verles por el barrio y necesito que me den sus recomendaciones locales de eventos y lugares que visitar(especialmente de comida). Tendré dos días de horas abiertas para charlar con ustedes la semana que viene (lunes 22 de 8 a 10am, y martes 23 de 5-6:30pm), pero les invito a que me llamen, manden un mensaje de texto o envíen un correo electrónico en cualquier momento para conectar (617-816-4721, karla@arisehighschool.org). 

Estoy a su disposición y tengo muchísimas ganas de conocerles.

Dear ARISE Community,

I am deeply grateful for the great honor of serving this community that is deeply rooted in social justice. I came to this country from Valencia, Spain with my mother when I was fifteen years old, and entered a school that was not designed for someone who was getting used to a new culture and language. My experiences in the education system led me to become a teacher, coach, and principal in Florida and Boston. During my years as an educator I have realized that the school is a home and community center, and has the potential to really wrap-around and learn from our families and students.

I have chosen to join ARISE because I want to be part of a community that truly wants to change and improve the world. I know that our mission is something that we can achieve and that is crucial in this political and social moment in which we live. An education that supports and teaches to tear down walls of hatred and inequality is what we demand. In order to continue to aim for this lofty and necessary goal we must join forces, and radically reimagine and strengthen what it means to be with and for each other as a community.

For this reason I have decided to live in East Oakland with my partner Morgan and two dogs (Rosa and Chita). I really hope to put roots down here and be part of this extraordinary group of intellectual warriors. I hope to see you around the neighborhood, and I ask that you give me your local recommendations of events and places to visit (especially food).
