STEM courses empower ARISE students with…

+ Knowledge:

  • Students will be engaged in culturally relevant, rigorous grade-level content in every lesson. Each course is either A-G approved or a college class.
  • All units and lessons will be guided by essential questions and backwards planned from grade level benchmarks.
  • All math, science and pathway courses will follow the vertical alignment map to build towards greater rigor and complexity from course to course

+ Skills:

  • All students will engage in remediating or refining pre-algebra numeracy math skills.
  • All students in each math course will engage in the Common Core Mathematical Thinking Practices, pushing a student’s critical thinking and reasoning skills.
  • All students in each science course will engage with the NGSS science and engineering practices.
  • All Public and Community Health Pathway classes will teach the Health Science and Medical Technology Pathway Standards (communication, technology, and problem solving and critical thinking).
  • Students will engage in structured academic discourse multiple times every class period in order to deepen their understanding of S.T.E.M. content.

+ Agency:

  • All students will embody the core values of Respect, Persevere, Build and Lead in order to act as agents of change in their communities.
  • Students will engage in productive struggle as they take on the majority of the cognitive load in their classes, cultivating and maintaining a growth mindset.
